Solution Details 4 of 5: The Tilt Strategy
-
- The tilt strategy was
central to the birth of this proposal. It was spawned from
two earlier realizations. First, there was a newspaper
photo of a limp woman allowing herself to be dragged by police
officers at a UC Berkeley Middle East peace rally. As the
newspaper showed her noble act of passive resistance, the world
appeared no different for her sacrifice of the day before.
This led to the conclusion that activism could accomplish more
if directed at smaller goals that can generate tangible change.
-
- The second precursor
to the tilt strategy was the emerging awareness of indefensible
positions. Many policies and members of the Bush administration
have so grossly wronged the American people and the world that
an examination of certain positions led to the recognition that
the worst of these stances were only maintained because they
were going unchallenged. When Trent Lott lost the Senate
leadership, the tilt premise emerged. Lott's loss came
not from a new indiscretion as much as from a novel challenge
to a previously uncontested history of racial insensitivity.
-
- Michael Moore's Bowling
For Columbine warrants special mention here as its timing
enabled a closed loop around the ideas above. Recall the
scenes at K-Mart, where Moore and victims of the Columbine school
shootings confronted executives about the continued availability
of bullets at K-Mart stores. The sequence concludes with
a pledge to discontinue the practice. Moore tilted K-Mart.
Other tilt targets then began to emerge accompanied by the media
and propaganda concepts discussed on other pages of this proposal.
-
- Below are just some
of the situations where one or more parties appear to be maintaining
an indefensible position, a stance held only by virtue of being
unchallenged. All of these situations are ripe to be tilted,
generating change by a forced confrontation with the facts.
Prioritization is the first key question followed by a case-by-case
confrontation strategy.
